`1-sparse Reconstruction of Sharp Point Set Surfaces
نویسنده
چکیده
We introduce an `1 sparse method for the reconstruction of a piecewise smooth point set surface. The technique is motivated by recent advancements in sparse signal reconstruction. The assumption underlying our work is that common objects, even geometrically complex ones, can typically be characterized by a rather small number of features. This, in turn, naturally lends itself to incorporating the powerful notion of sparsity into the model. The sparse reconstruction principle gives rise to a reconstructed point set surface that consists mainly of smooth modes, with the residual of the objective function strongly concentrated near sharp features. Our technique is capable of recovering orientation and positions of highly noisy point sets. The global nature of the optimization yields a sparse solution and avoids local minima. Using an interior point logbarrier solver with a customized preconditioning scheme, the solver for the corresponding convex optimization problem is competitive and the results are of high quality.

[AS] This paper presents a new point set surface representation by combining implicit moving least squares (IMLS) with robust statistics. In particular, they explicitly derive IMLS in the local kernel regression (LKR) framework, forming the basis of...
متن کاملPatch-Graph Reconstruction for Piecewise Smooth Surfaces
In this paper we present a new surface reconstruction technique for piecewise smooth surfaces from point clouds, such as scans of architectural sites or man-made artifacts. The technique operates in three conceptual steps: First, a graph of local surface patches, each consisting of a set of basis functions, is assembled. Second, we establish topological connectivity among the nodes that respect...
متن کاملModeling and 3D object reconstruction by implicitly defined surfaces with sharp features
We propose a new method for describing sharp features (i.e., edges and vertices) of implicitly defined surfaces. We consider an initial implicitly defined surface, which is represented as the zero set of a C1 smooth scalar field with non–vanishing gradients. In order to represent sharp edges and vertices, this surface is augmented by adding new types of implicit representations, called edge des...

Rapid advancement of 3D sensing techniques has led to dense and accurate point cloud of an object to be readily available. The growing use of such scanned point sets in product design, analysis, and manufacturing necessitates research on direct processing of point set surfaces. In this paper, we present an approach that enables the direct layered manufacturing of point set surfaces. This new ap...
متن کاملWavelet frame based scene reconstruction from range data
How to reconstruct the scene (a visible surface) from a set of scattered, noisy and possibly sparse range data is a challenging problem in robotic navigation and computer graphics. As most real scenes can be modeled by piecewise smooth surfaces, traditional surface fitting techniques (e.g. , smoothing spline) generally can not preserve sharp discontinuities of surfaces. Based on sparse approxim...
